TRANSITION PERIOD

  • 23. This would be my child’s first time at a school. Should I accompany the child to the centre?

We encourage parents to accompany your child to school, depending on your child’s age and how soon he settles down. Once your child begins to interact with other children, leave and allow him to settle down on his own. Your continued presence may make the adjustment more difficult as your child would take a longer time to overcome his separation anxiety.

Please contact the centres directly as this arrangement varies for each centre and is subjected to the prevailing measures set by Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) during the current COVID-19 pandemic and other diseases outbreak.

  • 24. What should I do if my child refuses to attend the centre, or has fears and nightmares about going there?

Be calm and direct with your child. Emphasise all the fun he will have. Reassure your child that he will soon settle down in the new environment and make new friends. Meet up with your child’s teacher to discuss ways to help your child overcome his fears. By meeting up with the teacher and speaking positively about the school and teacher to your child, he will gain confidence and feel that the teacher is someone he can trust. Allow your child a period of 2 weeks to 1 month to adjust to the new routine.

During this adjustment period, it is important for parents and teachers to communicate regularly. Parents can tap on the mobile app to communicate with the teachers.
